Moon and sixpence, a novel written by Maugham, a famous British writer, tells the story of a middle-aged man pursuing his dreams. Charles, the protagonist, was originally a very ordinary man. He married and had children, and lived a simple life of work and family every day.

One day, he burst out. All of a sudden, he left a letter and ran away from home, saying that he wanted to learn to draw and pursue what he loved most. A forty-year-old man, who has lived half his life, wants to start a different life again. He abandons his wife and children, loses all his identities, and seeks the truest thoughts in his heart. No one can understand his crazy behavior.

But in the 17th year after their marriage, he suddenly left home for Paris, abandoning what outsiders saw as a good career and family. Just when people suppose that he ran away because of an affair, the fact that people found out was that he was just painting.

At this time Charles did not have any painting foundation, he just liked to draw. In the eyes of outsiders, he was absolutely insane. His life began to become worse-off,and he  almost died of hunger and disease several times.

His paintings were completely different and were always destroyed on the original things. No one would buy his paintings except a crappy painter, Del Kstrov, who regarded him as God, and in fact he never sold paintings easily.

He kept wandering, and finally came to Tahiti and married an indigenous girl, Aita. At this time he seemed very content. He had an indigenous wife ,lived in isolation and painted there every day.

Unfortunately, he soon became infected with leprosy, and a year before he died, he became blind. Aita took care of him until he finished his own giant frescoes and died of festering. His wife burned the house which is full of murals in accordance with his last words, not even leaving a piece of wood.

The ground was covered with sixpence, but he looked up and saw the moon. The moon is out of reach, but sixpence is within reach. It takes a lot of courage to give up everything in order to pursue the untouchable ideal of painting in your heart.

And more often than not,a genius has an unknown or unthinkable experience before he is discovered. Charles Strickland had an inexplicable experience, and on the whole his life was so fascinating that, even if it was difficult for us to understand, it did not influence our curiosity.

Charles Strickland's former half of his life is like thousands of families' in the world, with a stable source of finance, a virtuous and gentle wife, and a lovely child, but he ran away from home on a family trip, leaving his wife with nothing but a pale letter. Without an explanation or any apologies, he left like this, as if there had never been such a person in the world.

He did not care about the entanglement of poverty and the torture of illness. The works shows the contradiction between genius, personality and material civilization, as well as modern marriage and family life, and have a broad perspective of life. The scalpel, which exudes the smell of disinfectant, dissects the human nature wrapped in the skin with sharp anatomy, which mixes the disdainful laughter and cruel eyes of the viewers.

After Maugham's novel came out, it became a great sensation in the literary world with its plots and profound words, and people raced to pass it around. The prototype of this novel is Gauguin, a French impressionist painter, which adds to its legendary color and attracts the attention of readers all over the world.

Maugham deeply discusses the contradiction and interaction between life and art in his novel. The theme of escapism revealed in the novel coincides with the pursuit of many people in the west, and it has become a popular novel in the 20th century.

Sixpence was the smallest unit of British silver at that time. A friend joked to Maugham that people often forgot the sixpence under their feet when they looked up at the moon. Maugham thought this was very interesting, so he gave this title to the book, which was very joking. The moon represents lofty ideals, and sixpence represents reality.

The departure of Charles, the protagonist, is far away from the logic of reality and even  incomprehensible to readers. In fact, there are deeper reasons to explain the purpose of Maugham's writing, that is, the virtual satisfaction of Maugham's self desire.

Charles attempts to express through his art what appears to continually possess and compel him inside, cares nothing for physical comfort and is generally indifferent to his surroundings. But he is generously supported while in Paris by a commercially successful Dutch painter,Dirk Stroeve, who immediately recognizes Strickland 's genius.

He was like the sixpence in the title of the book, but he saw the moon and the world under the moonlight was so beautiful. So he gave up everything and wanted to show beauty by painting at any cost.He never thought of his past life and did not regret it. The illusory things like love made him feel ridiculous, as if he had only the bright moonlight in his eyes.

There were sixpences all over the ground, but he looked up and saw the moon. This is a classic sentence from the book The Moon and Sixpence. The simple sentence can roughly cover the core content of the book. “Sixpence” symbolizes money and fame, while “Moon” symbolizes the purest and best dream in the heart.

The beginning of the story is different from that of other novels. The author does not introduce the plots quickly, but through the analysis of the relationship between his personality and his works,he brings a slightly vague image to the readers: a disgusting but unique genius and artist.Only after the desires of the readers were truly stimulated did the author officially start telling his story.

From a spectator's point of view in the former chapter, the author shows us the crazy, absurd and inhumane side of Strickland. However, in the latter chapter, Strickland described in Tahiti through other people's mouths, gives me the impression that he is driven by the desire for art, which is pitiful but admirable.

The author once described Strickland's paintings as follows: "You may not like his paintings, but you can't help but be interested in it."The first time I saw it, I felt confused and disappointed, but I couldn't take my eyes off it.The bright colors on paintings are like countless hands holding your heart.

What does he want to tell us through this painting? I kept speculating, but I couldn't get an answer. Serenity was no longer possessed in me because of the painting.I think this is the realm of beauty.Art is the expression of emotions, the moon in the night sky, and a very beautiful existence in our life.
